It’s apple season in the Midwest, and that sounds like a great reason to make apple crisp! A few fun facts about apples: They are grown in all 50 states, they are the second most valuable fruit in the U.S. (oranges are first), and they float because 25% of their volume is air.

A few fun facts about Johnny Appleseed: He was a real guy! John Chapman was born in Massachusetts in 1774. He did not fling out apple seeds in a happy-go-lucky manner; he planted apple tree nurseries in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana, which he returned to every year or two to tend. Did he really wear a cooking pot on his head? Only his hairdresser knows for sure.
Our featured recipe today is from Team Manager Melissa Virgin (WI). It has just four ingredients and it is delightful!

Better than Gramma’s Apple Crisp
Submitted by Melissa Virgin (WI)
Ingredients
- 6 cups chopped, peeled apples
- ¾ cup (1½ sticks) butter, melted
- 1½ cups oatmeal
- Nana’s Apple Cake Mix®
Directions
Place apples in a greased 9×13 baking pan. In medium bowl combine butter, Nana’s Apple Cake Mix® and oatmeal; stir until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes. Serve warm. Serving suggestions: Top with ice cream or Creamy Caramel Sauce. Makes 12-15 servings.
Testing Notes:
- I used Honeycrisp apples (which were fantastic), but any crisp, tart apple will work well. Some suggestions – Cortland, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Braeburn. Avoid Red Delicious, as they are not good baking apples.
- The apples I used were fairly small, so I needed about seven of them to get six cups of diced apples. One thing I have learned about apples: never assume that one peeled/chopped apple equals one cup! Always measure your chopped apples, especially when making Nana’s Apple Cake. It’s not as important with this particular recipe, but with cakes and such too many apples means mushy.
- The house smelled divine while this was baking!
- The top was lighter in color than other apple crisps I have made, but it was crunchy and delicious.
- I served the apple crisp with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of Creamy Caramel Sauce. My testers loved it and have urged me to make it again!

I just want to clarify, do you use old fashion oats or quick oats for this recipe?
Hi Wendy – I used Old Fashioned Rolled Oats, but you could also use the quick cooking kind.

I’m thinking the Carmel Cinnamon Sprinkles shaken on top would take this over the moon. Any thoughts?
